"The best thing we can do for nature is simply spend more time in it. From there, reverence grows and action flows.”

Eagle steals sensor camera, makes viral video

Posted on: December 5th, 2013 by Matt Herring No Comments

I’m still in shock. The media storm this week has been incredible. From the Pakistan Daily Times to the New York Daily News, it has been priceless promotion for the Kimberley Rangers and for sensor cameras.

The ABC News youtube clip has 3.6 million views and is still rising steadily.

The story begins at the end of May earlier this year working with the Gooniyandi Rangers. After our first week of biodiversity surveying and training, we were packing up all of the traps. I was adamant that we wouldn’t leave until we found the missing camera. We thought it had fallen into the water and floated somewhere nearby. I’m glad I didn’t push the point too much. A young White-bellied Sea Eagle had taken it. Somebody, somehow found the camera a couple of months later and handed it in. Apparently it was a long way away – 110 km – though this part of the story I cannot verify yet and it seems extraordinary.

It’s a crazy story in any case and the world is soaking it up. I even heard a whisper this morning that Ellen DeGeneres will be showing it on her show to her 3.5 million daily viewers.
